One of Fu's favorite philosophers Voltaire said “la vie est mouvement.” It means life lies in motion. Fu loves sport, especially in Taekwondo. He has won a bronze medal in men's lightweight sparring in an ECTC competition (USA National Collegiate level) in MIT on October 22th, 2017.
Fu has read an article that claims our hearts have limited beats in our lives. It says: “Most of us will manage less than four billion beats in our lives.” Fu chooses to exercise a lot by doing Taekwondo because he wants to live longer.
Imagine if the normal resting heart rate is 60 beats per minute to 100 beats per minute, we can take the average of 75 beats per minute. Athletes usually have a lower heart rate than ordinary people such as 60 times per minute, which make them to live longer.
In order to compare the heart rate of ordinary people and athletes, let's do some elementary math calculation!
· Assuming normal people do not exercise, to maintain resting heart rate (75 beats / min), then the number of beats per day is:
· 75 x 60 x 24 = 108, 000 times
· Assuming athletes exercise one hour a day, strenuous exercise, the heart rate is 140 beats / min, the resting heart rate is usually 60 beats / min, then the total number of beats one day the athlete's heart rate is:
· 140 x 60 x 1 + 60 x 60 x 23 = 91, 200 times
We can see that athletes have fewer heartbeats than normal people who do not exercise which make them live longer. If you hardly ever exercise, maybe consider to start moving so you can live longer!
